All About Me

PHYSICAL
I have a soft black coat, and I think that the gray under my chin gives me a distinguished look.

PROFILE
I learned my new name, Pauli, very quickly, as I am quite attentive to people around me. I really enjoy the company of my foster parents and their dog. I absolutely adore being outside -- relaxing in the shade, soaking up the sun, and rolling in the grass (check out my video!) -- so I need a home that has a nice grassy fenced-in yard. Two of my other favorite things are walking through the neighborhood and hiking on trails. I would love to be a part of a family with adults or adults with older kids.

I welcome doggy visitors! Look at the picture of me with my companion and a little sweety girl who came to stay with us for a week!

I love everyone and wag my tail whenever we meet people and dogs on our walks. I would really like to chase some bunnies and squirrels, but my foster mom won't let me!

My foster mom is training me on basic commands; this is all new to me, so I'm building my skills slowly -- but boy, are those reward treats tasty! I already have mastered Sit and Down. I am house-trained and sleep through the night. I will sometimes rest in my crate, but I don't like the door closed. My people have learned that when they are away, I can be trusted to not chew on any of their belongings.

There are some memories from my past that make me fearful and anxious, primarily indoors. The sound of metal clanging, like my collar on a metal dog bowl (so no metal bowl for me!), and other unexpected noises startle me. I recover quickly, however.

When I first came to my foster home, I was very wary of the stairs. I looked up and down that tall flight in fear; but with time, and because I want to be near my people whenever possible, I now take the stairs two at a time!

I hope this shows you how brave I am and how willing I am to conquer my fears! I look forward to new, fun experiences and to being a part of your family!

I live with a chemist, an astronomer, and a mathematician, and they named me after the physicist Wolfgang Pauli. He is known for the Pauli Exclusion Principle, but with my cute face and friendly demeanor, they of course are not excluding me!

HEALTH
I am up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed. I am gradually working down to an ideal weight in the mid-20s.

I tested heartworm positive and am receiving a gentle protocol to gradually eliminate the heartworms: an initial 28 days of doxycycline along with heartworm preventative (ivermectin--Heartgard, Iverheart, or Tri-heart) twice that month, continuing with the preventative every two weeks for a year.

With the gentle protocol, no excessive confinement is required. However, I should not be out in the heat for long periods of time, and should not engage in heavy exercise until I test negative for heartworms. Heavy exercise that should be avoided includes full-speed running for any distance, jogging more than a short distance such as one block, repetitive ball chasing, and high-energy play with other dogs. But I don't do any of those things, anyway. Leash-walking is fine in most cases, as long as I do not get winded and it is not too hot.

Most dogs will test negative for heartworms within a year using this method. I began the gentle protocol in late April 2021, so I should test negative by May of 2022.
