PHYSICAL
Penny Rae is a slim girl, mostly fawn with assorted white spots including white-dipped toes and the cutest perky ears you ever did see.

PROFILE
A bit shy when she first meets you, just let her sniff your hand, and then when she lets you pet her, you will be fast friends.

Some of her favorite things in the world are snuggles, pets, boops, and spooning with her canine foster brother (a 50-lb male pit mix--they take turns being the big spoon!).

Other favs include going for walks in the cool of the morning and evening (when it's not too hot out) and playing with her stuffed soft toys (she likes variety--squirrel, racoon, fox, and zebra).

Penny knows Sit, although sometimes she pretends that she can't hear me (ah, but her ear twitching gives her away!).

She has been improving in her leash-walking skills. I'm so proud of her progress! She is house- and crate-trained, sleeps through the night, and can entertain herself with her toys or a bone. She would do well either with another dog that she can pal around with or as the only dog.

HEALTH
Penny Rae is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed. She tested positive for heartworms. IAR uses a gentle protocol to gradually eliminate the heartworms: an initial 28 days of doxycycline along with heartworm preventative (ivermectin--Heartgard, Iverheart, or Tri-heart) twice that month, continuing with the preventative twice a month for a year.

With the gentle protocol, no excessive confinement is required. However, until the dog tests negative for heartworms:
Should not be out in the heat for long periods of time.
No full-speed running for any distance.
No jogging more than a block.
No repetitive ball chasing.
No high-energy play with other dogs.
Can be leash walked in most cases, as long as he/she does not get winded and it is not too hot.

Most dogs will test negative for heartworms within a year using this method. Penny Rae began the treatment in August 2021, so she should test negative in August 2022.

HISTORY
Penny Rae was surrendered to a rural shelter.
